During the recent Game Awards, Metal Gear creator and Konami's sole lifeblood Hideo Kojima showed us the second trailer for his upcoming game. Titled Death Stranding, this is the first game under his development since his departure from Konami.
Kojima's name alone brings a lot of hype into the game. The two trailers add a world's worth of WTF moments for fans to speculate on.
For starters, the presence of The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has turned all of us into a bunch of twelve-year-old girls at a Justin Bieber concert. Even film director Guillermo del Toro (who directed Hellboy, Hellboy: The Golden Army, Pan's Labyrinth, Blade II, Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, all of which have been praised) is apparently involved in Death Stranding. And to top it all off, Doctor Strange and Star Wars: Rogue One actor, Mads Mikkelsen, is set to star in Kojima's upcoming game.
So yeah, Death Stranding is going to be huge. But what is it? I like to guess things under a skirt, so I'm calling some stuff now. Here goes:
Kojima has mentioned that the game will be different from other action RPGs.
Kojima is no stranger to developing action games. For crying out loud, he devoted decades into Metal Gear, and that game is intense. However, his scope has always been limited because of the core stealth mechanics of Metal Gear.
I can imagine Kojima is itching to try something different. It also helps that Kojima Productions is working close with Guerilla Games, the team behind the upcoming PS4 exclusive, Horizon Zero Dawn (from the trailers alone, that game itself defines action).
There will be stealth!
Or I think there will be. Based on the second trailer, we see Guillermo del Toro sneaking around, keeping out of sight of a military that uses organic glob-like parasites attached to a tank. That could hint that Death Stranding might have stealth mechanics.
This might also pave the way for choices. Should we attack the camp head-on? Sneak around it? Should we infiltrate another facility to steal something and use it to attack the camp? In any case, even if Kojima is sick of stealth, the inclusion of the mechanic that utilizes features outside of the scope of Metal Gear sounds exciting.
Kojima said it will be open world
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had a large open world in its own right. Kojima is starting fresh with Death Stranding and I can only hope it will be bigger.
Based on what we've seen in the trailer, there will be a lot of exploration in the world of Death Stranding. It won't just be a wasteland like what we've seen in Fallout (which in truth, is nothing too extravagant from the previous games in the franchise); the Death Stranding trailers show us a world that has been ravaged and overtaken. It is weird and horrific. It won't be a typical post-apocalyptic wasteland.
We can also assume that the open world will be hostile, seeing all the weird things flying around and heavily armed people who seem to be synced-up to a single leader.
Which leads us to....
He appears in the second trailer. Four cords are attached from his mommy pouch to four skull-faced military machos, giving us a quick idea that they are a task force of some kind.
When Kojima said something about the action RPG genre being integrated into the game, we assumed it might be Guillermo del Toro or Norman Reedus sneaking around with a fetus pod in their arms.
We haven't thought if it would be possible for players to control the task force that might be after said fetus pod. Or maybe we'll get to play two different characters switching between narratives? Either way this is good stuff.
Kojima mentioned something about online elements
This one's a bit tricky, but
I'm leaning to something similar to the invasions in Dark Souls and Watch Dogs.
It won't take up too much time; just enough for players to keep on playing the
game so that they can acquire resources to craft more fetus pods.Â
It will be weird
Part of the massive success of Metal Gear is attributed to all the fascinating characters you come across in the series.
Looking back, we see Vulcan
Raven, Psycho Mantis, The Pain, The End, the entire cast of "Beauty and the
Beast", and Quiet breathing through her skin. The Death Stranding trailers are already weird, and Kojima won't waste
the talents of Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen on some bland things we've already
It will be sexual
Kojima loves throwing sexual stuff into his games. It's his signature Easter egg. Death Stranding will no doubt be any different. There's already a nude Norman Reedus from the first trailer alone for viewers to ogle at.
In any case, this Hideo Kojima game will be large. Now that he has full control of his own creations, we'll finally get to see something from Hideo Kojima without too much limitation. Also, since it's a Kojima game, there will be long bouts of narrative shoved in our faces.
