True to its word, the AsiaPOP Comicon has everything the name implies: It has Asians. It has pop culture. And it has comics.
While the left-hand side of the convention houses the independent
artists and collectibles, the main stage and right side are where the
attractions are. Here are a few booths which you should check out if you plan
on visiting the SMX Convention Center
this weekend.
HBO and SkyCable
It sounds boring when you have to put the name of this booth, but it is
only here where you can sit your ass down on the Iron Throne and become the
ruler of Westeros. Apart from housing the most uncomfortable chair in the
world, the attendants will also let you hold a sword while you have your
picture taken (as if there weren't enough of those welded onto the seat
itself).
Magic: The Gathering
Smack dab in the front and center of the convention is a Magic: The Gathering booth where pros
and newbies can fight alongside each other. Though tournaments are the norm in
these kinds of setups, there are also teachers who are willing to put up with
training unskilled players.
Predator
Just like every event which remotely involves video games, Predator is
here, complete with their decapitated dragon head. While showcasing their
products is their main focus, there also happens to be an Overwatch tournament where players can fight one-on-one for a
chance at winning prizes and be the center of a small crowd's attention for
about 15 minutes.
TV5's Walking Dead
Even if it is older than dirt, TV5 has included an escape room featuring
the flesh-eating series. Groups of at least three people can stuff themselves
into a freight container with one unfortunate soul serving as the hostage. The
goal is to save the unlucky friend and escape before the zombies get you.
Netflix
Last but not least is a little streaming service on the right-hand side of the area called Netflix. Don't let the red carpet and the gigantic "N" scare you off, because entry to this place is free. In it, you can find various set pieces from shows like Stranger Things, Orange is The New Black, Riverdale, and (guh) Death Note.
The Stranger Things portion houses a replica of the Byers' living room, complete with a phone you cannot use to call pizza and Christmas lights set up during the wrong time of the year. There is also a hole which leads to the Upside Down.
Go through this Demogorgon-sized hole and you will find yourself in a jail cell straight out of Orange is The New Black. Here you can get your hair and makeup done just in time to have your mugshot taken before entering prison.
On the other side of the booth is a 60s diner straight out of Riverdale. Unlike the mugshots you take in Orange is The New Black, this area lets you sit down and take pictures while a murderer roams the streets of the town.
And then there's the Death Note
section, which has a VR experience that the ushers like to be all cryptic
about. Truth be told, it really isn't worth waiting in a long line for, as the
choice you make doesn't affect the outcome either way.
