Eggs in video games are similar to loot boxes in the sense that you receive something valuable whenever you open them (or hatch them). In most cases, eggs reward you with monsters, be it a Pokemon with good IVs or a dragon that helps you get a better score in EverWing.
Japanese companies Brownies Inc. and Powerchord Studio had something else in
mind. Enter Egglia: Legend of the Redcap, a mobile RPG
that topped the App Store charts when it launched in Japan. If you're wondering
what the game is about, just take the title literally.ÃÂ
You play as Chabo, an elf with a red cap who mysteriously finds himself in what is left of the kingdom of Egglia. Egglia was once a lush land inhabited by many races, but because of the destruction caused by enormous ogres, a wizard named Kuff sealed areas of the world within eggs to order to preserve it. In true RPG fashion, you are tasked to save Egglia by acquiring these eggs and "hatching" new lands.
a mobile game, Egglia: Legend of the Redcap
has a lot of elements. Aside from collecting eggs, you can summon spirits and
ward off monsters with your party. You can also build houses and establish your
town. More importantly (and this is something that piqued my interest), you can
invite characters you've met along the way to live in your town. It's an
element that reminds me of the classic RPG series Suikoden.
Egglia: Legend of the Redcap will launch on the App
Store and Google Play Store in North America, Australia, New Zealand and the
United Kingdom, along with many other countries in Europe and Southeast Asia
this coming August.ÃÂ
The game has some pretty big names in its developer roster. Its executive producer Michio Okamiya worked with several of Square Enix's games, including Final Fantasy V, VIII, IX, X, XII, and Vagrant Story. The head producer and character designer is Shinichi Kameoka, who is known for creating the art style of the Mana series and Mother 3. The soundtrack meanwhile was composed by Yoko Shimomura, the guy behind the scores of Super Mario RPG and the Kingdom Hearts series.
