This article is part of GameGulp's celebration for 20 years of Pokemon.
Wow 20 years.
Who would have thought that after 20 years, the world would still be obsessed with Pokémon and the gigantic effect it has had (and still has) on us. From toys, clothes, and yes, video games, the virtual cock-fighting simulator has evolved (hehe) far beyond that of its original 150-monster roster but for those who were there when Pokémon was just beginning to take-off, we remember it for two things: the anime and the video games.
Now seeing as this is a gaming website, let's do away with the anime for now and focus on the first two Pokémon games released outside Japan: Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. First released on the Nintendo Game Boy in 1998, the games focused on catching and training a wild variety of Pokémon whilst battling other trainers and wild Pokémon.
But you probably knew that by now, didn't you?
From Pallet Town all the way to the Indigo Plateau, the Pokémon universe is more likely known for its creatures than its lesser-known strange inhabitants: the people. On your adventure, you may have encountered a couple (READ: a vast majority of the region's population) of people just blocking your way so that they can fight you.
These folks usually have something snarky to say once approached or defeated in which some quotes stick out more than others. So it is within this fun, nostalgic trip that we highlight some of the Kanto region's non-player characters and their little tidbits of wisdom.(Note: Some of the quotes within this list contain some mature humor. Also, do yourself a favor and click the video while reading this since it will make you feel old.)
1. "This is my grandson. He has been your rival since you were a baby... Erm, what was his name again?" - Professor Oak, exhibiting early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.
2. A Jr. Trainer in Brock's gym, which upon being defeated, mentions...
3. The same Jr. Trainer, making you question his preferences...
4. AÂ Lass, who apparently does not notice that you are at least 2 blocks away and not even looking in her direction.
5. AÂ trainer, once beaten, looks to his girlfriend for "comfort"...
6. ...Or not.
7. One of many Youngsters, detailing the wondrous features of shorts.
8. Another Youngster, taking the idea of lower body wear too seriously.
9. A Sailor, who seems to have spent too much time alone.
10. Hehehe, this gym is great! It's full of women!"-- an old man outside the Celadon City Gym.
11. Professor Oak, being a bit too joyful in your victory.
Of course, this is just a portion of the whole game's dialogue. There are even more funny and weird lines that can be found within the two games as well as their numerous sequels. You just have to keep an open eye and (quite possibly) a dirty mind.
