Star Wars The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi has indeed exceeded expectations in a lot of ways. It's a challenge to talk about how good the film is without dropping certain words that would give the faintest hint on what is going to happen.

The movie has moments that are truly horrifying. There are moments of bravery; not just from the main protagonists but from the rest of the Rebels whom the audience forgets about as soon as they leave the cinema. There are moments of doubt and desperation when things started going awry. And of course, no Disney movie would be without humorous moments between brutal scenes.

In past Star Wars episodes, I never had emotions towards the grunt units. The Last Jedi is different. There is an eerie sense of desperation and dread coming from the grunt Rebels. We witness them triumph and fail.

There is a certain arc within the story that I felt it could have done without. But you can decide for yourself when you see it. You won't miss it, I swear.

What I found the most intriguing is that the film works on its own. You don't need prior knowledge to any of the past Star Wars films to know what is going on. You get pieces of backstories from multiple point-of-views and put them together. The classic intro reel gives you the basics of what's happening. There's the Resistance and there's the First Order. Characters are introduced and you're told who they are and what their role is. The rest of the flow comes from the film's momentum. You can understand what's happening without backtracking.

Of course, it helps if you've seen The Force Awakens and the original trilogy. The Last Jedi has elements and scenes painted with nostalgia. It's more about coming full circle. This was, in my opinion, a clear distinction that the entire saga is now ready to head towards a new direction.

If anything, The Last Jedi is a letter of gratitude: to George Lucas and to the audience who support the saga with such passion.

Judging from what transpired in The Last Jedi, I believe it's safe to say that Star Wars Episode IX will be a great mystery. There will be fighting for sure, but it's not so simple a transition as Empire Strikes Back to Return of the Jedi.

Unlike Empire Strikes Back, The Last Jedi left things off at... you know what, just go watch it.
