Blizzard Gamescom 2016 Overwatch The Last Bastion

Blizzard released its fifth animated short for Overwatch yesterday at the Gamescom event. This one, called The Last Bastion, features the origin story of Bastion, a.k.a. that annoying turret robot who kills everyone while camping.

In Overwatch lore, Bastion is the only surviving combat unit from the Omnic Crisis, a war waged by the omnics (robots) against the humans 30 years ago. Severely damaged in the last few battles before the crisis ended, it lay dormant and forgotten, claimed by nature over time, only to be reactivated one fateful day by a curious little bird. Unaware of how much time has passed, this inquisitive Bastion set out to rediscover its purpose while enjoying the beauty of nature surrounding it.

In the short, there's a flashback of the battle between the German defense force and the omnics, which took place in Eichenwalde, Germany. You'll even see a glimpse of Balderich von Alder, Reinhardt's mentor, in action. It's worth mentioning since Eichenwalde is the new map that will be released for Overwatch soon. It'll feature the assault/payload objective, similar to that in Numbani and King's Row. Incidentally, Eichenwalde is also where Bastion awoke from its deep slumber.

It's a beautiful short that kinda has a Pixar-feel to it. I'm not sure if it will make you hate Bastion users less but either way, this will make you have a soft spot for the robot.
